Renovation

North Scott High School

Interior demolition of the 34,000 SF of Administrative Offices and Media Center at the North Scott Community School District began in August 2014. The rebuilding and building addition portion of this project consisted of a renovated entrance, office, and media center spaces. Two clerestory windows in the media center and one clerestory in the main entrance to the building provides natural lighting.

The North Scott Community School District had many improvements they wanted to make to their high school to improve the learning and teaching experience for students and faculty. However, at the top of their list was a large project to create a grand entrance to the high school and basketball arena and improve their media center and administrative areas. In August of 2014, Bush Construction began work on the project. The main challenge of a project like this was high schools do not shut down for construction. We had to maintain a safe learning environment throughout the entire project. This project not only featured two large additions, but also extensive interior renovations as well as clerestory additions to the roof. In the end, a beautiful new media center, administrative area, secure main entrance, staff and faculty offices, additional restrooms, and new concession stand were built. District officials accomplished their goal by defining a project the whole community can be proud of.

Bowe Machine

Bowe Machine is a 58-year-old, family-owned machining and milling business in Bettendorf, Iowa that manufactures industrial shear blades, composting equipment, large metal-shredding blades, and other equipment sold worldwide. They chose Bush Construction to upgrade outdated space into state-of-the-art production bays.

The project included a 32,000 SF pre-engineered metal building addition which now houses four overhead cranes, a large gantry mill, and other milling machines.

The demolition of the old structures began in July 2014, followed by minor excavation. Installation of helical piles was required to help support the building columns.

Bowe Machine remained in production during construction, which took place between (and connecting) their two occupied buildings.

Genesis Health Systems | Birth Center

The renovation of Genesis East Health System’s entire fifth floor for their new Birth Center included complete flooring replacement, new millwork, paint and wall coverings in the corridors, public areas, and in 31 patient rooms, as well as, plumbing and electrical upgrades throughout. TV’s were also installed in all patient and waiting rooms. Room renovation included several different room styles. Rooms were completed in multiple phases (two rooms per phase), in order to keep the majority of the rooms in operation during construction. Daily coordination with the owner and nursing staff was required in planning all activities as this was a functioning hospital environment.

Augustana College | Westerlin Hall

The Augustana College Westerlin Hall is the largest residence hall, housing 455 students in three separate, three-story wings – Jenny Lind, Immanuel, and Westerlin. Bush Construction renovated the entirety of Westerlin Hall in three separate phases over three of Augustana’s summer breaks; completing one wing per summer.

Renovations on the residence hall included window replacement, upgrades to the mechanical and electrical systems, plumbing and restroom upgrades, new interior finishes and flooring, installation of an elevator, roof replacement and masonry restoration.

Pleasant Valley Junior High School

The Pleasant Valley Junior High project consisted of four building additions which included science rooms, additional classroom space featuring high ceiling corridors and clerestory windows, an industrial tech center and extended food prep area. These additions incorporate load-bearing CMU walls with steel joists and decking with EPDM roofing. The existing boiler was also replaced with three high-efficiency boilers, adding an air-cooled water chiller and five new rooftop units.

The school’s media center, guidance offices, orchestra room, kitchen and boy’s locker rooms were also renovated during this project. These renovations took place while school was in session, making coordination with the school district imperative for a successful completion.

Lawrence Lofts

The upper stories of the Lawrence Building, in Sterling, Illinois, stood vacant for 50 years. Bush Construction renovated the 22,000 SF second through fifth floors of this office building, originally built in 1910, and converted them into 20 residential units now named the Lawrence Lofts. The first floor remains under the ownership of the Whiteside County Courthouse Extension Office.

Located in downtown Sterling, this project is part of the City’s revitalization plan of adaptive re-use of underutilized buildings.

Truman Elementary School

The Truman Elementary School renovation project consisted of extensive demolition of the existing interior, as well as the in-filling of an existing pool in order to make space for additional learning areas. Bush Construction renovated classrooms, offices, music and art rooms, and bathrooms, as well as added a large media center. The mechanical and electrical systems were completely replaced with highly integrated and efficient variable refrigerant flow (VRF) heating and cooling system and geothermal technology. Our project superintendents managed two shifts in order to maintain a fast-paced, 10-week long schedule.

Jackson Square Apartments

The 90-year-old, 50,000 SF renovation and addition to the Jackson Square Apartments involved transforming a former industrial manufacturing facility into trendy, living space. This project allowed Bush Construction to delve into the multi-family residential market for the first time. We worked closely with the architect during the design phase to get the project within budget while still meeting the owner’s request for a functional urban style.

This historical structure required abatement of the asbestos in various locations as well as the remediation of regulated materials from numerous storage areas within and surrounding the building. Much of the building’s original structure and features were retained in order to provide a character-rich project, including exposed brick walls and wood floor structure. The westernmost portion of the building represents the original structure, which was restored to its former glory by cleaning and tuck-pointing the terra cotta tile and brick. The west wing of the building is also on Rock Island’s list of historic buildings, which required special approval prior to the replacement of windows.

What was once an urban brownfield is now an attractive center for family living and commerce.

Mississippi Valley Surgery Center

The Mississippi Valley Surgery Center and Endoscopy Center are outpatient facilities in Davenport, Iowa. Bush Construction was MVSC’s construction partner for numerous projects over six years.

The project consisted of building modernization both interior and exterior, build-outs to the Ear, Nose and Throat Professional Services, new restrooms and spaces in Iowa Women’s Health and the Plastic Surgery Center and renovation and build-out for Orthopedic Specialists.

The project also included the renovation of the existing space office with a new physician break room and sterile storage room, which required extensive coordination with HVAC tie-ins, for the Vascular Suite. In addition, Bush renovated the Orthopedic Specialists’ office in Clinton, Iowa.

The construction occurred in an active medical office environment, which included daily coordination with medical staff, as well as the building’s owner.
