Green House Venture: Urban Agriculture Education Center

Bush Construction is honored to serve as the design-build partner for the Green House Venture Education Center – a visionary project that blends sustainability, education, and community impact. Located in St. Louis’ historic Shaw neighborhood, this 9,500-square-foot facility is the capstone to the Green House Venture (GHV) campus and a cornerstone for STEM and bioscience education across the region.

As both designer and builder, Bush Construction worked closely with GHV from day one to translate their mission into a dynamic, forward-thinking facility. Every element of the design reflects a shared commitment to hands-on learning, environmental stewardship, and access to cutting-edge agricultural technology.

As Sarah Gibson, Bush Construction’s Director of Design in St. Louis, shared during the groundbreaking ceremony:
“It is one thing to design and build a building, but it is another to rally a community, a city, donors and volunteers behind a vision. Just like planting a garden, many times we see the bounty but forget about the effort it took to get the soil mix right… The Green House Venture has planted seeds over the past several years, spread them widely, and changed planting strategies to benefit the vision and increase the impact when called for.”

The Education Center features:

  • A state-of-the-art greenhouse with aquaponics, vertical farming, and rooftop rain gardens

  • Flexible classrooms and lab space designed for bioscience and nutrition curriculum

  • A demonstration kitchen, multi-purpose gallery, and gathering areas for both students and the community

  • Integrated media technology enabling live-streamed instruction and regional outreach

  • Sustainable infrastructure including solar readiness, rainwater harvesting, and energy-efficient systems

Our team prioritized universal design principles and long-term sustainability throughout—from concept to construction—ensuring the center is accessible, adaptable, and built to serve generations of students.

Slated to open in Fall 2026, this project embodies Bush Construction’s ability to deliver complex, community-centered spaces through a fully integrated design-build approach. We are proud to help Green House Venture bring their bold vision to life and build a platform for future leaders in science, agriculture, and wellness.

Montessori Training Center

Situated at 3854 Washington Avenue in Grand Center, this new facility will both train future teachers and certify them in Montessori education. It will also have a school on-site in which experience teachers and teachers in training will work with infants and Toddlers.

Montessori education and instruction emphasizes independence as well as a respect for a child’s natural development. Part of Montessori training includes teaching young children to clean-up after themselves but also to take turns serving their fellow classmates.  Low cabinets and sinks were installed at the center so that children aged 3-5 can wash plates and prepare meals.

The Montessori Training Center is another welcome addition to the ever-developing Grand Center area, and we were excited to be a part of this redevelopment. We will continue to work with The Montessori Training Center as they complete their master plan in Grand Center.

Rock Island Center for Math & Science

The Rock Island Center for Math and Science is a choice magnet school for pre-kindergarten through sixth-grade. This school is the Quad Cities field office for the Illinois Math and Science Academy, based in Aurora, Illinois. This new construction facility was built in the heart of Rock Island, Illinois, on almost 10 acres of wooded nature trails. The school was designed to allow teachers the opportunity to make learning exciting in creative, innovative, and flexible ways.

The 65,000 SF facility consists of multi-purpose classrooms, science and math rooms, a media center, a gymnasium, a cafeteria, a full-service kitchen, and community rooms. The majority of this facility is heated and cooled by the use of high-efficiency heat pumps. This keeps energy consumption costs low but allows end-users greater flexibility in zone control.

Davenport Community School District | Children’s Village West

This Davenport Community School District project successfully converted the existing Davenport Museum of Art Building into a new Infant to Kindergarten daycare facility called the Children’s Village West. The project consisted of a complete interior demolition and remodel of all floors and also featured a large main entrance addition. All mechanical and electrical systems were upgraded. A complete fire alarm and sprinkler system were also added. The exterior facade was restored with all new windows, flashings, membrane roofing, and tuckpointing/caulking.
